Description

Lexadon was delighted to purchase Walton Lodge Laundry on Coldharbour Lane, Brixton in late 2014. This beautiful three-storey Edwardian brick-built lodge has been well and truly ‘steam-pressed’ into Brixton's history due to its operation as a laundry for over 100 years.

According to Brixton Buzz, the Walton Lodge Sanitary and Steam dates back to 1880, when dairy owner Charles William Newland and his wife set up a domestic laundry service from their home. In 1885, with business booming, they reportedly abandoned their dairy and expanded into a large house on Coldharbour Lane called Walton Lodge – and so the business that was to trade for 119 years was born.

Sadly, the laundry closed in the summer of 2014, but the positive news was that we began to sensitively develop the building retaining all the beautiful features highlighting the 19th century property’s heritage.
